Cookies & Milk Snack Mat

Whether or not Santa visits your home, this Cookies & Milk snack mat is a cute cookie lover's project. Easy sewing and a touch of embroidery make it simple to make. When my kids were young, they used these mats every day. Finished size is about 10 1/2" x 8". They're cuter than paper plates, reusable, washable, and handmade with love. Let's begin!

First thing you'll want to do is download the Cookies & Milk Snack Mat PDF Pattern that includes templates for the appliqué and embroidery. Now you can get started.
You'll need:
- Two base fabrics (11 x 8 1/2" each)
- One piece of trim 11" long
- One ribbon or trim for tag 2" long
- Fabric pieces for appliqué (Plate should be approximately 6 1/2" square. Milk circle should be no less than 3" circle)
- Fusible web for appliqué (ex. HeatnBond) and a dissolving printable adhesive stabilizer for the embroidery (ex. Sulky Sticky Fabri-Solvy)
- Embroidery floss
Use a 1/4" seam throughout.
Step 1: Add trim to bottom of front base fabric. Place your trim and base fabric right sides facing, raw edges aligning. Fold both ends of the trim down at a 45 degree angle, as shown in the pic.

Step 2: Add your appliqué pieces. First, trace your templates onto the paper side of fusible web and cut out these pieces at least 1/4" larger than your traced lines. Press the fusible web onto the wrong side of your fabric, using the manufacturer's instructions. Then cut out your “plate” and “milk” circle by cutting directly along the lines of the traced templates. Press onto your base fabric as shown below:

Step 3: Add a little ribbon tag 1 1/4" down from the upper left hand corner, if you'd like. I always baste stitch my tags in place about 1/8" in from the raw edge.

Step 4: I like to spray baste batting or use fusible batting on the wrong side of base fabric. Place the backing and the base fabric right sides facing. Sew along all four sides of the snack mat, leaving a 3" opening along one side for turning the snack mat right side out. Gently push out corners and press well. Stitch your 3" opening closed.

Step 5: Stitch the appliqué pieces down about 1/8" in from their edges. Stitch once or go around several times for a fun look.

Step 6: Embroider. I like to stitch a circle (it's about 3 1/2") centered in the middle of the "plate" using a running stitch. Also did a running stitch around the "milk" circle. Then back-stitch the words provided on the template PDF. Bury all your knots or loose ends within the layers of fabric and batting so that the mat looks nice front and back. Now you are done! Yay!
