The Mia Ruffle Bib PDF Pattern & Tutorial

The Mia Ruffle Bib PDF Pattern & Tutorial

We originally posted this bib pattern back in 2012, the year my youngest daughter was born. I’m so happy to offer it again, here, and I’ve so enjoyed looking back at some of the bibs I’ve made… like a trip down memory lane. But… let’s get started.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Bib template in PDF pattern here
  • 9 1/4” x 8 1/4” base fabric
  • Two strips: 12” x 1 1/2” for ruffles
  • Two strips: 12” x 1 1/2” for bib ties
  • Backing fabric (I’ve used chenille, flannel, batting + another layer of quilting cotton): 8” x 8”
  • small pieces of fabric to make a patch, a label, or appliqué (optional)
  • buttons (optional)

Step 1: Fold your base fabric in half and press to create a crease. Open the fabric and draw a line 1 3/4” to the right and left of the center crease.

Step 2: Press your two long ruffle strips in half, lengthwise, wrong sides facing. (I kinda just pressed my strips in little pleats, rather than ruffles, but you can do what you like best.) Line up the unfinished edges of the ruffle strips to the inside of the right and left lines: stitch in place using a 1/8” or very scant 1/4” seam.

Step 3: Fold the fabric snuggly over the unfinished edge of your ruffle and press with an iron. Sew a 1/4” seam down the fold. Repeat this to enclose both ruffles.

Step 4: Press both ruffles so that they’re facing outwards; topstitch.

Step 5: Center the bib template onto the back of the base fabric. (Fold your template in half, lengthwise, and use the center fold as a guide). Trace the bib template onto the fabric. Cut around your template line leaving a 1/4” seam allowance.

Step 6: Make your ties (or forget all this and just use ribbon). Press your tie fabric pieces in half lengthwise, right sides facing. Sew along the length and one end with a 1/8” seam. Turn right sides out, and topstitch. Lastly, sew to top front of bib.

Step 7: Pin bib front to backing material, right sides facing. Secure the bib ties to the center bottom of the bib, the same spot where you’ll be leaving a 2 1/2” opening for turning the bib right sides out. Stitch along your traced template line. Pull the bib right sides out. Make small clips around bib curves, as close to, but never into the stitches. Gently push the bib into its curvy shape and press well.

Step 8: Top stitch bib, about 1/8” from outer edge, all around the entire bib. This will close your 2 1/2” opening at the bottom of the bib and help it to retain its shape. Now you are finished, unless you’d like to add a little embellishment, which you know I always do. A label is easy, but making a fussy cut patch out of fabric is also cute. For this bib, I appliquéd two stacked pieces of fabric (backed with HeatnBond) and finished with a zig-zag stitch; occasionally, I have added buttons as well, but that is so extra. Happy Sewing!

xx Amy
